Imported mycoses : some diagnostic problems W . ST C . SYMMERS

چکیده
Introduction The first, and in many cases the greatest, problem in the correct clinical management of mycoses is their recognition. In general, delay in the diagnosis of mycoses results primarily from failure to consider that a fungal or actinomycetous infection may be the cause of a patient's symptoms. In this respect the problem is a commonplace one, not confined to mycoses: its solution lies in greater knowledge and greater awareness of diagnostic possibilities. Among the 353 cases of 'imported mycoses' in the accompanying table, the possibility of a mycosis was among the initial diagnostic considerations in just under 15%.

متن کاملDiagnostic problems with imported cases of mycetoma in The Netherlands.
Eight cases of imported mycetomata in The Netherlands are reviewed. Seven of these were cultured; only one isolate, Actinomadura madurae, belonged to a species commonly known as an agent of mycetoma. The remaining strains either belonged to very rare species, such as Phialophora cyanescens, or could not be identified at all. The list of possible agents of mycetoma apparently needs to be expande...

In a paper published three years ago on the histological diagnosis of thrombotic purpura during life I reported three cases in which the characteristic thrombotic microangiopathy was present in biopsy material (Symmers, 1956). In one of the cases the vascular lesions were found in the basal stratum of the endometrium and in endocervical fragments in a specimen obtained by curettage: the operati...
